When entering Cortillo, there is a sense of the traditional Spanish village, with rustic buildings housing shops and private accommodation and a couple of waterside restaurants offering very fresh fish and general Spanish offerings.
Most of the local businesses are closed in the afternoons, which makes the village feel sleepy and deserted. When you view the sea through the historic buildings, it looks as if the coastline is going to be nothing but black boulders jutting out of the sea. It comes as a pleasant surprise therefore, when you get to the rocky area and then look to your right, there is golden sandy beaches stretching out into the distance.

As a naturist, and depending on the time of year, and day of week, you may be quickly disappointed that there are no signs of any nude activity in the sea or on the beach, but after a few minutes you will come to a large mound housing two or three man made bunkers.

This is normally a good clue that naturism exists on this particular beach.
In Fuerteventura, because of the very strong winds that can batter the island, you will find groups of these bunkers on most beaches, built with pebbles rocks and stones, to protect sun-worshipers from the elements.
As anticipated, just a minute from the first bunker, our first seen nudist on this beach strode purposefully from the sea towards his family.
One of the amazing things about nudism in Fuerteventura is the ability of nudists and textiles (non-nudists) to co-exist on the very same beach, even sat next to each other, without a glance or a surprised look between the two parties.

In Gran Canaria, one of the other Canarian islands, there seems defined areas between the clothed and the un-clothed, or more accurately, swim-suited, and naked. For example, if you walk along the beach at Playa Ingles, you would normally find everyone in some sort of swimming costume. A bit further on and you will observe a big sign indicating that the are ahead is naturist or FKK which is the German language equivalent. (The letters FKK stand for Freikörper-Kultur which means Free Body Culture)
After the notice there are nudists galore, most of which are on Maspalomas beach which is slightly further on towards the south of the island. There will be more coming soon on Nudist UK about nudism in Gran Canaria and in particular Maspalomas.
Back on Cortillo beach, walking to the next stretch of beach, it becomes evident that this a regular haven for naturists, local and tourist. There is a church style building at the end of the official beach area behind which there is a road absolutely crammed with parked cars.

After the “official” beach, we move to a series of mini-nudist beaches, with plenty of naturist areas dotted around. One nudist lays recumbent on some rocks, which looks uncomfortable, but each to their own!
I would definitely recommend Cortilla beach as being a great place to bare all, with its beautiful beaches and inviting ocean. On the downside, there wasn’t any beach facilities such as bar or eating facilities, so my recommendation would be to take a picnic for during the day, and then treat yourself to a fresh fish dinner in one of the local restaurants back in the village.
